Robert Giblin

November 18, 1952 - February 19, 2025          Omaha, Nebraska

Robert James Giblin grew up in the football-rich community of Port Neches, Texas. He graduated from Port Neches-Groves High School in 1971, where he proved to be a gifted all-around athlete. Giblin lettered in both football and golf and stood out on the gridiron as an All-District wide receiver. His combination of size, speed, and intelligence on the field made him one of the area’s most promising young talents, earning him statewide attention and paving the way for a college football scholarship. His time at Port Neches-Groves cemented his reputation as a disciplined competitor with a strong sense of teamwork and leadership, qualities that followed him throughout his athletic and professional life.

Upon graduation, Giblin accepted a football scholarship to the University of Houston, where he played from 1971 to 1974 under coach Bill Yeoman. Initially recruited as a wide receiver, he switched to defensive back early in his college career, a move that proved to be pivotal. His athleticism and quick adaptability allowed him to excel at the position, and he soon became one of the Cougars’ most dependable cornerbacks. Giblin lettered in all three of his varsity seasons and was twice named a First-Team All-American defensive back in 1973 and 1974, a remarkable achievement that underscored both his consistency and football IQ. His play helped establish the University of Houston’s defense as one of the strongest in the Southwest during that era, and his performance drew the attention of professional scouts across the NFL.

In 1975, Robert Giblin was drafted in the fourth round (79th overall pick) by the New York Giants, marking the start of his professional career. He played for the Giants from 1975 through 1976, contributing to their defensive backfield with steady coverage skills and a reliable tackling presence. In 1977, he joined the St. Louis Cardinals, where he played two more seasons before retiring after the 1978 campaign. Over four years in the NFL, Giblin demonstrated the same determination and discipline that had defined his high-school and college careers, earning the respect of teammates and coaches alike. Although his time in the league was relatively brief, his journey from small-town Texas to the NFL reflected both his natural ability and unwavering work ethic.

After retiring from professional football, Giblin turned his focus back to academics, determined to build a successful second career. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Lamar University in 1980, then continued on to the University of Houston College of Law, where he graduated in 1982. Transitioning from athlete to attorney, he built a respected law career and became a well-known figure in the Beaumont and Port Arthur communities. His analytical mind and competitive drive translated seamlessly from the football field to the courtroom, and colleagues often noted his calm demeanor, sharp reasoning, and dedication to fairness. Beyond his legal career, he remained connected to local sports and education, embodying the balance between athletic excellence and lifelong learning.

Robert Giblin passed away on February 19, 2025, at the age of 72, leaving behind a legacy that bridged athletics, education, and community service. Remembered as both a fierce competitor and a thoughtful professional, he represented the ideals of perseverance and adaptability that define so many athletes from Southeast Texas. His induction into the Museum of the Gulf Coast Sports Hall of Fame recognizes not only his achievements on the field but also his life of purpose after football. From All-District wide receiver to All-American defensive back, from NFL player to accomplished attorney, Robert Giblin’s story is one of determination, versatility, and lifelong excellence.
