Elandon Roberts

Born: April 22, 1994                              Port Arthur, TX

Elandon Roberts (born April 22, 1994) is a linebacker in the National Football League, best known for his time with the New England Patriots. He attended Memorial High School in Port Arthur, Texas, where he was a standout member of both the football team and the track and field team. Roberts began his college career at Morgan State University, where, as a freshman, he recorded 107 tackles — the second-highest single-season total in program history. He also added nine tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, and two pass breakups. After one season, he transferred to the University of Houston, where his football career continued to flourish.

As a senior in 2015, Roberts served as a team captain for the Houston Cougars and recorded 142 total tackles, leading the American Athletic Conference and ranking fourth in the nation. His 88 solo tackles led all players in the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly NCAA Division I-A). His dominant senior year performance solidified his reputation as one of the toughest and most productive linebackers in college football.

Roberts was selected by the New England Patriots in the sixth round (214th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft. He made his first NFL start on October 16, 2016, against the Cincinnati Bengals, tying for the second-most tackles on the team with seven in the Patriots’ win. In his second season, Roberts started 14 games and was part of the 2017 Patriots team that won Super Bowl LI. He recorded two tackles in that game, as the Patriots defeated the Atlanta Falcons 34–28 in overtime after rallying from a 28–3 third-quarter deficit — the largest comeback in Super Bowl history and the first Super Bowl ever decided in overtime.

In his third season (2018), Roberts played in all 16 regular-season games and started 11 of them. He posted a career-high four pass deflections and one sack, along with 31 solo tackles (including six tackles for loss) and 34 assisted tackles. Once again, Roberts and the Patriots advanced to the Super Bowl, defeating the Los Angeles Rams 13–3 on February 3, 2019. He played in all three postseason games, recording six solo tackles in the Super Bowl, including one for a loss.

In 2019, Roberts was voted a team defensive captain and became a key member of the Patriots’ dominant linebacker corps, nicknamed “The Boogeymen” by teammate Dont’a Hightower. Starting in Week 7, Roberts began contributing on offense as well, taking on the role of fullback after injuries to teammates. He finished the season with 29 tackles, one sack, one pass defense, and one tackle for loss. On December 29, 2019, he scored his first career touchdown when he caught a 38-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady against the Miami Dolphins during a 27–24 loss.

On March 24, 2020, Roberts signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Miami Dolphins, which included a $1 million signing bonus. He became a starting inside linebacker and played in 13 games with 11 starts, recording 61 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. He re-signed with the Dolphins on March 24, 2021, continuing to play a leadership role on the team’s defense.

After participating in Houston’s Pro Day on March 24, 2016, Roberts stated, “The team that pulls the trigger on me is getting the best linebacker in the draft,” predicting that he would reach both the Super Bowl and the Hall of Fame. His confidence proved well-founded — he is now a two-time Super Bowl champion and an inductee into the Museum of the Gulf Coast’s Hall of Fame, which he first visited as a third-grader. In recognition of his achievements, Memorial High School also retired his football jersey, cementing his legacy as one of Port Arthur’s most accomplished athletes.
