Farley Fontenot
December 12, 1931 – August 16, 2018 Port Arthur, TX
Farley Fontenot is a Port Arthur native, championship sailor, sailmaker, coach, and co-founder of Quantum Sails. He grew up in a sailing family and began learning sailmaking as a teenager, making sails in his family’s living room before entering the profession full time. In 1977, Olympic sailor John Kolius recruited Fontenot to work in the sailmaking business in Seabrook, Texas, beginning a long professional partnership in Gulf Coast and international yacht racing.

In 1985, Fontenot and Kolius founded UK Sails Texas. The loft became a major Gulf Coast sailmaking operation, producing sails for competitive racing programs and building a reputation in Grand Prix events. Fontenot’s work combined hands-on sail construction, race experience, and technical design knowledge, allowing him to serve both as a sailmaker and as a competitor who understood performance from the deck of a boat.

In 1996, Fontenot co-founded Quantum Sails and later served as Executive Vice President. Quantum developed into an international sailmaking company with lofts and representatives serving racing and cruising sailors. Fontenot’s role placed him in the business, design, and performance side of the sport, where he worked with sailors seeking sails built for specific boats, conditions, and racing goals.

Fontenot’s racing record included major achievements in one-design and offshore competition. He was a two-time member of a J/24 World Championship team and sailed aboard the winner of the Southern Ocean Racing Conference. He also competed aboard an International 50-foot class world champion and a One Design 48 circuit season champion. In J/80 racing, Fontenot and Kolius won the J/80 North American Championship and placed second at the J/80 World Championship.

Alongside his work as a racer and sailmaker, Fontenot coached Melges 32 teams, competed aboard the RP 86 Windquest, and raced his own Viper 640. His career included sail design, sailmaking, yacht racing, coaching, and company leadership. From his early work in a family living room to his role in building two major sail loft operations, Fontenot became one of the Gulf Coast’s leading figures in competitive sailing and one of the Port Arthur area’s strongest connections to international yacht racing.
