Bob Pollard

Born: December 30, 1942                             Beaumont, TX

Bob Pollard attended Hebert High School in Beaumont, Texas, where he excelled both academically and athletically, earning recognition for his strength, discipline, and leadership on the football field. Following his high school career, Pollard continued his education and athletic journey at Texas Southern University in Houston before transferring to Weber State College in Ogden, Utah. At Weber State, he became a dominant force on the defensive line, earning attention from professional scouts for his combination of size, speed, and football intelligence. In 1971, his hard work paid off when he was selected in the 11th round of the NFL Draft, 262nd overall. That same year, he was among 16 NFL players from Southeast Texas honored by Beaumont Mayor Ken Ritter with a ceremonial key to the city.

Pollard’s professional career began with the New Orleans Saints, where he played from 1971 to 1977 and quickly established himself as one of the most dependable and respected defensive tackles in franchise history. Known for his toughness, consistency, and ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks, he earned the title of team captain for the Saints defense in both 1976 and 1977. His leadership helped anchor the Saints’ defensive line during some of the team’s most formative years. Pollard later continued his career with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1978 to 1981, bringing veteran experience and a strong work ethic to the organization. Over his 11-year NFL career, he was credited with 57 sacks, 14 fumble recoveries, and one defensive touchdown — impressive statistics that underscored his impact on the field.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Pollard was inducted into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame in 1995, a fitting honor for one of the franchise’s early defensive stars. His Saints jersey, number 82, was retired — a rare tribute that symbolizes his legacy and enduring influence on the team’s history. Beyond his professional success, Pollard remained deeply connected to his roots in Beaumont, Texas, where his rise from a local high school standout to an NFL leader continues to serve as an inspiration to young athletes across the region.
