Raymond Meyer
(1933)
Bishop Byrne's Green Machine. Raymond Meyer possessed extraordinary athletic ability from an early age, having the rare distinction of being a four-year letterman for the Bishop Byrne Shamrock football team from 1949-1952. During his high school playing career, Meyer was named All-District, All State and All Catholic All American Prep, a special honor since Bishop Byrne was such a small school compared to some of the larger east coast Catholic high schools that had five times Byrne's enrollment. In 1952, Meyer led the Shamrocks to the Texas Catholic Interscholastic League State Championship. In 1953, Meyer lent his talents to the Louisiana State University Tigers. Transferring to Lamar University, he compiled three seasons in 1954-55-56. He was named to the small college Little All-American team in 1956. After college, Raymond Meyer was offered a tryout with the San Francisco 49'ers. During one of the practices, he shattered his knee.
