Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown
1924 - 2005

Born in Vinton, Louisiana, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown was a multi-instrumentalist known the world over for his interpretive rhythm and blues stylings that incorporated many Gulf Coast cultural elements. Brown played bass, drums, electric fiddle, guitar, harmonica, mandolin, viola, and violin. Raised in Orange, Texas, he played clubs in east Texas cities such as Beaumont, Port Arthur and Houston during his early career. Later he performed in many blues and jazz festivals and concerts throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa, and Japan and was voted W. C. Handy Award for Instrumentalist of the Year in 1982 and 1986 as well as Entertainer of the Year in 1983. Recordings include "Alright Again" (Grammy award, 1982), "Pressure Cooker" (1986), and "Real Life" (1986).
